SUIT:
Long-sleeved jacket^ straight or pleated Skirt, of gray, dark blue, brown, or black wool. Patterns are acceptable if they are subtle, such as a fine dress tweed. No dresses. The jacket should be tailored to fit. The smart should be at or just below the knee. The jacket sleeve should end at the joint or the wrist and the hand. Remember to avoid short skirts and tight jackets and skirts. Also, avoid overly trendy styles.
SHIRT:
White, or a pastel shade, in a material that doesn't look shiny or unnatural. Cotton or matte silk is ideal. Try to avoid frills such as puffy sleeves and lace. The collar should be fully buttoned. A collar pin, simple gold necklace, or small string of pearls is a nice touch.
FOOTWEAR:
Sheer stockings or pantyhose in a skin tone, or lighter (white stockings are acceptable if the suit is on the light side). The best shoes are simple pumps with a one-to-two inch heel. It is important that can walk quickly and steadily. Shoes should be of high-quality leather in black or the color of the suit. Basically, they should be dark, clean, and polished.
ACCESSORIES:
Post earrings are best as is one ring at most per hand, and one bracelet if any. Make sure that jewelry doesn't "jingle" when you gesture or move! A tasteful lapel pin is fine but not together with a collar pin. Scarves are popular, but be sure to avoid large or distracting prints.
Also, you may want to purchase a leather portfolio and good pen (Engineering Career Services has portfolios that you may borrow). If you carry a purse, it should be of good quality, preferably a good leather (avoid canvas purses, etc.). Purses should also be large enough to carry a wallet, small cosmetic bag and keys but not big enough for your gym attire. If possible, keep your backpack at home and stay away from eating that garlic Caesar Salad or drinking alcohol the day before the interview.
MAKE-UP. ETC.:
Try to keep your make-up light and natural looking. Stay away from frosted or bright lipstick, eye shadow, or nail polish. No long, acrylic nails. It's best to keep your hair out of your face and if it is long you may want to pull it away from your face. If you use mousse or hairspray, keep it very light. In terms of fragrances, avoid any perfumes, etc. The recruiter may be allergic to it!
DRESSING FOR THE RECEPTION:
The formality of recruiting receptions varies from one company to the next. Occasionally, the promotional materials or invitations to the reception will indicate the appropriate attire. In the absence of any guidelines from the company, the best approach is to dress in business attire, as you would for an interview (see above).
"BUSINESS CASUAL":
Invitations to recruiting events occasionally indicate that "business casual" attire is appropriate. Experts recommend a pantsuit, blouse with slacks or skirt, or a simple dress, оr sundresses or jeans.
Keep in mind you don't always have to buy something new. Borrow from a friend or family member. Start building your business wardrobe now so you don't have to buy everything all at once.
